An 18-year-old Spotsylvania man was pursued and caught after attempting to break into a residence while brandishing a rifle.

On July 17th just before midnight, deputies responded to Cynthias Place for a disturbance with a weapon. The caller advised a known male was outside her residence attempting to gain entry while brandishing “an AR style” firearm. Due to the nature of the call, deputies were quick to arrive in the area just as the suspect was leaving. Deputy H.T. Wagner observed the suspect vehicle turn onto Lyons Boulevard and First Sergeant B.U. Demirci attempted to make a traffic stop on Plantation Drive. Instead, the driver took off at a high rate of speed, initiating a pursuit.

The vehicle fled onto Warrenton Road and entered onto I-95 Southbound. Deputies continued to follow the fleeing vehicle as it took exit 130 and began traveling West on Route 3. In the area of Orange Plank Road, the suspect vehicle began traveling on the wrong side of the road with its lights off in an attempt to lose deputies. This would prove to be too much for the suspect driver, for he lost control and ended up in a ditch in the area of Black Meadow Road. The driver would quickly surrender to Deputy D.S. Jett and, with the assistance of Virginia State Police and Spotsylvania County deputies, he was taken into custody.

Deputy A.M. Oliveria made contact with the victim to determine what occurred. It was discovered the victim was having a girl’s night which upset the suspect. He proceeded to her residence and attempted to break down a door. He would brandish a rifle while doing so. The rifle in question was located by Sergeant A.W. Sypolt within the vehicle. The driver was identified as Jameris Asher and he had signs of intoxication.

Asher was charged with attempted breaking and entering while armed, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, brandishing a firearm, assault, destruction of property, interfering with the property rights of another, felony eluding, driving under the influence, reckless driving by speed, driving without headlights, and to top it off, three counts of failure to stop at a traffic light. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

Amazing work to all the deputies involved for ensuring a dangerous suspect did not get away. Thank you to the Virginia State Police and Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office for your assistance.
