A 31-year-old Springfield man attempted to flee from deputies by going around in circles before crashing out Saturday afternoon.
On July 12th, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Sergeant R.S. Dominguez was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway. While in the area of Cavalier Skating Center, a silver Lexus traveling northbound entered his lane of travel. After almost being struck, Sergeant Dominguez activated his emergency equipment and made a U-turn in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Instead, the Lexus pulled into the Taco Bell at a high rate of speed, behind the 7-11, and onto Hospital Center Boulevard. With Sergeant Dominguez right on his tail, the driver entered back onto Richmond Highway only to immediately make a U-turn and drive past Sergeant Dominguez.
With no signs of stopping, Sergeant Dominguez engaged in a pursuit as the Lexus approached Burns Corner Place. At the intersection, the Lexus driver once again made a U-turn and began traveling back towards Richmond Highway. When he reached Richmond Highway, the driver once again made another U-turn to head back towards Burns Corner Place. Just past Burns Corner Place, the Lexus would strike a civilian vehicle being driven by a student driver. Due to the excessive speeds the Lexus was traveling at, the vehicle left the roadway, knocked down multiple posts before finally coming to a stop when it became entangled in a chain link fence. Luckily, none of the occupants within the civilian vehicle were seriously hurt.
Deputies attempted a high risk stop on the damaged Lexus, but the driver was noncompliant. As a result, pepper ball was deployed into the vehicle and had the desired effect. The driver exited the vehicle and was quickly detained. The driver, identified as Jose Caballero, had signs of intoxication and a revoked license.
Caballero was charged with felony eluding, driving under the influence, driving while revoked, and two counts of destruction of property. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. |
