Widewater Wrong Way Rider

Deputies just barely missed being struck head-on by a second offense drunk driver Sunday afternoon.

On March 30th at approximately 4:50 p.m. Sergeant E.E. West and Deputy S.M. Kotter were traveling Northbound on Widewater Road near Osterman. While doing so, a Honda came directly towards them, traveling Southbound in the Northbound lanes. The Honda would correct its mistake and steer to the proper lane as it passed deputies. If this occurred moments before when deputies drove through the curve in the road, it is likely neither party would be able to avoid the collision.

After witnessing the wrong way rider, deputies turned around and conducted a traffic stop on the Honda. The driver was identified as David Albrecht III, 34, of Stafford. Albrecht advised his driving behavior was due to him being “tired.” Tired or not, deputies observed signs of intoxication. It was also discovered Albrecht had a previous DUI in Stafford back in 2018. During a search of his vehicle, both empty and full cans of alcohol were located.

Albrecht was charged with driving under the influence second offense within ten years, drinking while driving, and failure to maintain the lane of travel. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond.

Drive sober or get pulled over.
