The numerous mistakes made by an intoxicated 31-year-old man made it easy for deputies to catch him despite his best efforts.
On February 15th at approximately 11:22 p.m. Deputy P.J. Leon responded to the Falmouth Shopping Center, located at 175 Cambridge Street, for a hit and run. It was advised a vehicle struck the building. Deputy Leon discovered a blue sedan, instead of reversing out of a parking spot, accelerated and struck the building before fleeing the area. While luckily there was no damages sustained, it did cause concern for a possible DUI driver.
A few short minutes later, First Sergeant D.W. Fetterolf located a vehicle that perfectly matched the one described in the area of Warrenton Road and Quarles Road. First Sergeant Fetterolf attempted to make contact with the driver as he parked on Quarles Road. The driver would have other plans and attempted to take off. His plan was delayed due to him accidentally reversing into a ditch. The driver would attempt to flee on foot; however, was unable to maintain his balance due to his level of intoxication. Gravity was against him and he tumbled several times. Deputies attempted to detain him when he would resist. After a struggle, the driver was eventually placed into handcuffs.
The driver had extreme signs of intoxication, including the overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. Within the vehicle, deputies located 15 empty beer bottles. It was also discovered the driver had no driver’s license. As a result, the driver was charged with driving under the influence, drinking while driving, failure to maintain control of a vehicle, reckless driving in a parking lot, driving without a license, obstruction of justice, fleeing from law enforcement, as well as, refusal. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
Good work to all the deputies involved in locating and stopping another DUI driver. |
