Trouble was brewing for a repeat DUI driver who just didn’t give a frappe after blaming his new DUI on his coffee.

Just after 2:00 a.m. on January 23rd deputies were working their daily grind in the area of Warrenton Road and Hartwood Church Road. While doing so, they conducted a traffic stop on a Jeep for a traffic offense. Deputy C.A. Sharp would mocha contact with the driver to see what was brewing.

While conversing with the driver, Deputy Sharp observed several unusual signs from the driver and it wasn’t the jitters. The driver had slurred speech, red, glassy eyes, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage no bitter coffee could disguise. When asked if he had been drinking tonight, the driver advised he had “coffee.” Unless it was an Irish Coffee, deputies weren’t so sure. Upon further questioning, Deputy Sharp inquired when the last time the driver did consume an alcoholic beverage. The driver advised “I’m trying to now, but you guys won’t let me.” He was correct.

When deputies espressoed their concern for the driver to be behind the wheel, field sobriety tests were conducted. Shortly after, the driver was under a-roast. It was discovered the driver, Stanford Miles, 49, of Stafford, had three previous DUI offenses. He was subsequently charged with his fourth DUI with a blood alcohol content above .2. His next cup of joe would be at Rappahannock Regional Jail, for he was held without bond.

Drinking and driving is no perfect blend. Remember, drive sober or get pulled over.
