If you were wondering why Staffordboro Boulevard was shut down last night, here’s your answer.
On January 16th at approximately 6:23 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office received an automatic crash notification at Staffordboro Boulevard and Woodstream Boulevard. First Sergeant A.I Assur, Sergeant A.T. Leckemby, and Deputy B.E. Vaughn responded to the scene. There, they discovered a Nissan that plowed into a Volkswagen, totaling both vehicles. Amazingly, no one was seriously injured.
Deputies made contact with the driver of the Volkswagen; however, the Nissan driver was nowhere to be found. It was advised the Nissan driver jumped out of the driver’s side window and fled towards Stafford Market Place immediately after the crash. Deputy Vaughn began looking for the driver in the area and observed a male and female walking together. Considering the male matched the description of the suspect driver and the female was crying over the state of her vehicle, Deputy Vaughn attempted to make contact with them to learn what happened.
The male would state he wasn’t driving, and that the female was. This was in fact a lie. Deputy Vaughn, knowing who the driver was, attempted to identify the male. The male would not like this, refuse, and discharge a barrage of curse words. After multiple attempts to have the driver comply, it was decided he would be detained. When the driver did not comply with that either, a short administration of OC spray was used. The desired effect was achieved and the driver was detained.
The driver was identified as Bryant Berryman, 37, of Stafford, and was discovered to have a revoked driver’s license. He was immediately treated by Fire and Rescue staff, who were still on scene of the hit and run he created. Berryman’s noncompliance continued as deputies attempted to get him into a cruiser to see the magistrate. When the topic of a second round of OC spray was brought up, Berryman elected to get into the vehicle.
Berryman was charged with felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, and driving while revoked. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail pending his ability to cooperate with a bond hearing. |
