A DUI driver and drugs were both taken off the streets after a concerned citizen made a simple report.

On January 3rd at approximately 11:58 p.m. Deputy P.J. Leon responded to the area of Poplar Road and Truslow Road for a drunk driver complaint. The vehicle in question was having a hard time maintaining the lane of travel. Deputy Leon would locate the vehicle, observe its swerving behaviors, and conduct a traffic stop.

Deputy Leon made contact with the driver, identified as Keith Kerns, 40, of Stafford. Kerns had characteristics commonly seen on someone who has consumed narcotics. It was also discovered Kerns was currently carrying a firearm. The firearm was secured by Deputy Leon prior to field sobriety tests being conducted. After the tests, Kerns was detained. Located within both his jacket and the vehicle were suspected controlled substances.

Kerns was charged with driving under the influence, possession of controlled substances, possession of a firearm while in possession of controlled substances, and failure to maintain the lane of travel. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $3,000 secured bond.
