A DUI crash that occurred on Sunday luckily had only minor injuries and ended with a wanted Annandale male behind bars.

On November 17th at approximately 3:36 a.m. Deputy J.J. Suh and Deputy C.T. Richardson responded to the area of Austin Park Drive and Richmond Highway for an auto accident. It was advised there were two vehicles involved, one of which was on its’ side and the driver was entrapped.

When Deputy Richardson arrived on scene, he immediately began assisting the Chevy driver out of her vehicle and into an ambulance. Simultaneously, Deputy Suh made contact with the Honda driver to determine what occurred. The driver, identified as 24-year-old Walter Sanchez Amaya, claimed “David” the driver, who he just met today, caused the crash and fled before deputies arrived. Witnesses were able to rebuff that claim and confirmed Sanchez was in fact the driver. Sanchez had signs of intoxication, admitted to consuming three Modelo sized beers, and a broken Heineken beer was located in his vehicle. Sanchez was wanted by the Maryland State Police for an outstanding bench warrant.

It was discovered the victim was traveling Southbound on Richmond Highway when she noticed the Honda stopped halfway on the shoulder and halfway in the right lane. Before she was able to react, the Honda accelerated and merged into her, causing the accident. The victim received only minor injuries, but was transported to a nearby hospital out of an abundance of caution. Sanchez was not injured.

Sanchez was charged with driving under the influence and fugitive from justice. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
