A 30-year-old Stafford man was arrested on his third DUI offense after taking a heroin and fentanyl mix before getting behind the wheel.

On October 12th at approximately 11:28 p.m. Sergeant M.L. Jacobeen and Deputy R. Tully responded to a drunk driver complaint. The caller advised a blue Ford pick-up was having a hard time maintaining its lane as it traveled Southbound on I-95. The caller followed the suspect vehicle as it took the 143 A exit and was heading towards Richmond Highway. Sergeant Jacobeen would observe the vehicle traveling 51 MPH in a 35 MPH zone and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Oak Drive. With Deputy Tully now on scene, the two deputies made contact with the driver.

The driver, identified as Jacob Boyd, had constricted pupils and slow speech, all signs of drug impairment. Field sobriety tests were administered and afterwards Boyd was detained. Within the vehicle deputies located suspected controlled substances. One of those suspected controlled substances Boyd admitted was a heroin and fentanyl mix that he had smoked earlier that day. It was also discovered Boyd had prior DUI offenses in both Stafford and Fairfax.

Boyd was charged with driving under the influence third offense within ten years, possession of controlled substances, and speeding. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
