The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office needs your help locating 36-year-old William Briggs who fled from a traffic stop Sunday afternoon.

On June 30th at approximately 4:53 p.m. First Sergeant A.I. Assur was on a proactive patrol at Wawa, located at 3099 Richmond Highway. While there, he observed an Acura with no front license plate enter the parking lot. The driver, visually displeased to see First Sergeant Assur, pulled into a gas pump as First Sergeant activated his emergency equipment for a traffic stop.

The three passengers exited the vehicle as the driver remained inside. Before a conversation could begin between First Sergeant Assur and the driver, the driver would put the vehicle in drive and rapidly and recklessly accelerate away. The driver would begin passing vehicles using the turn only lane at speeds above 95 MPH. Due to traffic conditions, officer safety, and the passengers being left behind, First Sergeant Assur did not pursue the fleeing vehicle.

Using law enforcement databases, First Sergeant Assur was able to positively identify the driver as William Briggs of Woodbridge. Briggs had a revoked driver’s license and the license plate displayed on the Acura returned to a Subaru. Briggs is now wanted by Stafford County for felony eluding, driving while revoked, improper display of a license plate, and driving an unregistered vehicle. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please contact local law enforcement. None of the passengers received charges.
