A 66-year-old Fredericksburg man attempted to avoid another DUI by changing spots with his passenger. Considering you’re reading this report, his plan failed.
On May 31st at approximately 5:50 p.m. Deputy J.L. Jones was traveling Southbound on Richmond Highway near Rappahannock Regional Jail when he observed a blue Nissan occupying both Southbound lanes in front of him. As Friday traffic continued, Deputy Jones observed the Nissan swerving and nearly struck two separate vehicles.
Deputy Jones was not the only one to notice the poor driving behavior, for that is when dispatch announced over the radio a drunk driver complaint regarding a blue Nissan. Deputy Jones conducted a traffic stop near Sage Lane. When the vehicle stopped, both the driver and passenger got out of their vehicle and traded spots. While not everyone had 20/20 vision, just about anyone could see this switcheroo.
Deputy Jones made contact with the driver, now in the passenger seat, who had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. The driver, extremely upset over the traffic stop, would provide three different identities, all of which were nonexistent. When his identity was uncovered it was discovered his license was taken away due to a prior DUI. While the driver admitted to consuming only “two beers” an open can of FourLoko was located in the vehicle.
The driver was charged with driving under the influence, driving after forfeiture of his license, falsely identifying himself to law enforcement, the traffic lane violation, drinking while driving, and refusal. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until sober.
