Many Stafford residents know if you flee from Stafford deputies, you will be caught. Unfortunately for one 19-year-old Stafford man, he didn’t get the memo during his first pursuit.

On May 17th at approximately 3:52 p.m. Sergeant G.A. Haney was in the area of Richmond Highway and Port Aquia Drive. While there, Sergeant Haney observed a Toyota Sienna traveling Southbound use a right turn only lane to proceed straight through traffic. Having witnessed the clear traffic violation that certainly annoyed nearby drivers, Sergeant Haney activated his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop. Instead the Sienna continued to accelerate, kicking off a pursuit.

Despite the Sienna making evasive maneuvers and traveling on the shoulder to pass several vehicles to get onto Garrisonville Road, Sergeant Haney kept up with the fleeing vehicle. Using every lane of traffic on the already congested Stafford Market Place intersection, the Sienna turned onto a service road between Applebee’s and Panera Bread. At speeds above 40 MPH in the parking lot, the Sienna would loop around the Chili’s and attempted to flee the same way it entered. Seeing this loop in progress, Sergeant Haney positioned his cruiser in the fleeing vehicle’s path where intentional vehicle contact was made to end the pursuit.

The driver, identified as Grant Egan, would at first refuse commands and instead elected to call his father. He was detained and discovered to be in possession of a vape. It was also discovered this was not his first time attempting and failing to flee from officers, for he was arrested for the same thing last year.

Egan was charged with felony eluding, improper lane change, reckless driving, and underage possession of vape products. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $3,500 secured bond.
