For those who know Drug Recognition Expert Deputy D.S. Jett, keeping Stafford’s roads safe is one of his favorite parts of his job. Yesterday afternoon that was on full display as he located yet another impaired driver.

On March 19th at approximately 6:25 p.m. Deputy Jett was proactively patrolling Butler Road. During his patrol, he conducted a traffic stop on a Mercedes, whose registered owner had a suspended license due to a DUI incident last year. Deputy Jett confirmed the registered owner and current driver were one in the same, resulting in the first, but not last problem.

The driver confirmed he knew he was not allowed to drive, but really wanted to pick up food. Since Uber Eats still works, that was not a valid excuse. The driver also advised there was a firearm concealed within the vehicle. This would be the next problem, considering the driver did not possess a concealed weapons permit, and the firearm had its serial number obstructed. During their interaction, Deputy Jett used his drug recognition expertise to observe several signs of impairment. After being placed in handcuffs, the driver did admit to taking substances unlawful to use while driving.

The 29-year-old driver was charged with driving under the influence second offense within five years, driving with a suspended license, second offense carrying a concealed weapon, and defacing the serial number of a firearm. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

Drive sober or get pulled over.
