A Stafford man was jailed without bond after leading deputies on a pursuit in North Stafford early Thursday morning.
On February 15th at 2:40 a.m. deputies responded to the Hidden Valley 7-Eleven for a suspicious vehicle. Deputy B.E. Vaughn arrived to find a red Cadillac XTS driving recklessly in the parking lot and attempted a traffic stop.
The driver refused to stop and initiated a pursuit southbound on Richmond Highway. Speeds reached 87 miles per hour as the suspect drove across the double yellow and disregarded a traffic signal at the intersection with Telegraph Road.
At Port Aquia Drive, the suspect turned to the left, but Deputy Vaughn was in the perfect position to make intentional vehicle contact and spin the Cadillac like a top. Deputy R.W. Stamm, Jr. sealed the deal, positioning his patrol car against the front of the Cadillac, blocking the suspect’s escape. The total length of the pursuit was just under two miles.
The suspect refused to exit the car for several minutes. Finally, after a brief struggle, he was taken into custody and identified as John Roberts, 63, of Stafford.
A suspected controlled substance was located in the car and Roberts spontaneously admitted to smoking crack. He was ultimately charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance, eluding, reckless driving, failing to obey a traffic light and obstruction. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
Thank you Deputies Vaughn and Stamm for safely removing this dangerous driver from Stafford County roads! |
