A groundhog in Pennsylvania can predict an early spring, but can’t predict a repeat DUI offender like Sergeant J.W. Hutcheson can.
While some of us feel like Bill Murray in the movie “Groundhog Day” at work, Sergeant Hutcheson’s day would be anything but repetitive. On February 1st at approximately 5:04 p.m. Sergeant Hutcheson was at 7-Eleven, located at 2337 Garrisonville Road, investigating a drunk driver complaint that would later be determined as unfounded. That being said, he stumbled onto another alcoholic offense as a man came stumbling out of the woods towards him. The suspect, later identified as Lenard Lovick Jr., 60, of Stafford, had clear signs of intoxication that could be seen, and smelled, from multiple feet away.
Lovick advised he had three 40-ounce beers prior to driving; however, he would change his story that an unknown friend drove him to that location. Since the vanishing friend could not be located, Sergeant Hutcheson turned to something he could trust a bit more, the businesses cameras. Camera footage showed Lovick drive to the business, purchase another 60-ounce beer, and run behind the business when he observed Sergeant Hutcheson first arriving. Sergeant Hutcheson would attempt to conduct field sobriety tests; however, could not due to Lovick’s level of intoxication.
This incident must have been like Groundhog Day for Lovick, for it was discovered he had five prior DUI convictions. His license was also discovered to be revoked due to those prior convictions. He was charged with sixth DUI offense with the previous offense being within five to ten years with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2, as well as, second offense driving with a DUI related revoked license. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. |
