An Alexandria man was caught red handed in a grand larceny attempt. Instead of admitting the jig was up, he made an attempt to flee.

On January 20th at approximately 4:04 p.m. Deputy X.D. Bates responded to Kohl’s, located at 1220 Stafford Market Place, for a report of a larceny in progress. Staff advised they were using cameras to watch a suspect conceal items. Deputy Bates was able to arrive at the business and watch the suspect select merchandise as Deputy S.M. Craig blocked the exit route. When the suspect began heading past all points of sale at a rather fast pace, deputies made contact with him in an attempt to detain him. While the suspect attempted to resist, he was detained.

The suspect, Carlos Rivera, 28, had over $1,000 worth of stolen items in his possession, as well as, suspected controlled substances. Rivera admitted to stealing the items in an attempt to sell them elsewhere. While continuing the investigation in the Lost Prevention Office, Rivera thought the jig was not yet up and attempted to dart out of the office. The jig was in fact up, for Deputy Bates was able to stop him before he was able to make it out of the office. Rivera would later apologize for his fleeing attempt and that it was “stupid.” His “stupid” action would add yet another charge to the ever-expanding list.

Rivera was charged with grand larceny, obstruction of justice, possession of controlled substances, and larceny with intent to distribute. It was also discovered he had nine pending criminal charges, and three failure to appear charges, many of which were related to larcenies. Rivera was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
