Deputies, and staff at the Days Inn, had a rather busy weekend dealing with multiple incidents where mind altering substances were a clear factor.

On January 19th at approximately 7:13 a.m. Sergeant M.E. Gordon responded to the Days Inn, located at 14 Simpson Road, to a public intoxication call. Staff advised there was a female in the lobby’s bathroom that was “not okay.” They later advised she appeared under the influence. When Sergeant Gordon made contact with the suspect, she observed several signs of intoxication. Despite the clear signs, the suspect denied being under the influence and offered to “walk the line”, referring to a field sobriety test. While it was a kind offer, it was unnecessary. The suspect also refused to identify herself, but luckily, Sergeant Gordon had arrested her before and was able to properly identify her. The suspect was charged with public intoxication and was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until sober.

Incident two would begin only a minute after Sergeant Gordon’s incident. Deputy F.C. O’Neill responded to IHOP, located at 10 Simpson Road, for a suspicious incident. Staff advised a disoriented female entered the business requesting Narcan. When Deputy O’Neill arrived, staff pointed out a female currently at, you guessed it, the Days Inn. Deputy O’Neill made contact with the suspect in view of the public where he observed signs of intoxication. The suspect advised she was wanted “probably out of everywhere.” Deputy O’Neill was able to confirm she was not in fact wanted out of everywhere, just Spotsylvania for shoplifting. The suspect was charged with public intoxication, as well as, served on her outstanding warrant. She was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond.

Incident three took place January 20th at approximately 11:30 p.m. Sergeant B.U. Demirci and Deputy M.N. Sayegh observed a vehicle in the parking lot that was running for over an hour. Deputies made contact with the driver to ensure he was alright. Instead, they discovered he was intoxicated, and wanted out of Westmoreland County for a capias charge. When deputies asked him out of the vehicle due to his intoxicated state behind the wheel and his wanted status, the driver refused. After multiple attempts to negotiate him out of the vehicle without avail, he was removed. The driver, who admitted to consuming a bottle of vodka, continued to be uncooperative all the way to the magistrate. He was charged with driving under the influence second offense in five years, two counts of obstruction of justice, and two counts of refusal. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
