A 48-year-old Stafford man was wanted and located the same day after assaulting an individual with a wooden slat.

On February 2nd at approximately 11:51 a.m. Deputy N.D. Fonseca responded to Anvil Road for an assault. When Deputy Fonseca arrived, he made contact with the victim, who had injuries to his head and arm. He was transported to a nearby hospital as Deputy Fonseca discovered what occurred from witnesses.

It was discovered the victim and suspect were traveling together in the area. The suspect, identified as Marcellus Berryman, began acting “wacky” and accused the victim of stealing his property. This led to a verbal confrontation that escalated when Berryman and the victim decided to fight each other in the roadway. During the fight, Berryman would pick up a discarded wooden slat and use it to assault the victim. He would quickly flee the scene.

A warrant for malicious wounding was obtained for Berryman. It was also discovered he had a similar warrant out of Maryland. Due to these factors, deputies continued their efforts to locate him, which would pay off. At approximately 9:52 p.m. First Sergeant D.W. Fetterolf and Deputy C.A. Osborn observed the suspect behind the wheel in the area of Short Street. With the assistance of Sergeant E.E. West, Deputy S.T. Myers, and his K-9 partner, Gunner, a high-risk traffic stop was conducted at Fredericksburg Tattoo Works, located at 348 Warrenton Road. Berryman, who was driving on a revoked license, was taken into custody without further incident.

Berryman was charged with malicious wounding and driving on a revoked license. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
