Running a red light in front of a deputy is not a wise choice. Proceeding to assault the deputy during the traffic stop is an even worse choice. An unhappy 24-year-old driver discovered both these facts last night. On January 21st at approximately 7:59 p.m. one of Stafford’s finest was traveling on Richmond Highway. At the Austin Park Drive intersection the traffic light turned red and the deputy stopped. The Challenger next to him did not and ran the red light. The deputy would conduct a traffic stop and make contact with the driver. The driver, Jamal Homesley, of Stafford, would not only have a registration sticker that expired back in 2022, but also an expired inspection sticker and suspended license. Due to these factors, the deputy elected to issue summonses and have the vehicle towed. The Challenger driver would challenge this by refusing to take the summonses and assaulting the deputy. Deputies attempted to detain Homesley as he resisted and made threats to “smack” and “beat” the deputies. During this close encounter, deputies detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Homesley’s breath. Eventually, Homesley was detained. Within the vehicle, deputies located numerous empty alcoholic beverages. The deputy was not injured. Homesley was charged with assault and battery on law enforcement, obstruction of justice, having an expired inspection, having an expired registration, driving while suspended, drinking while driving, and to top it off, running a red light. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. |
