A young Stafford driver found himself in big trouble after having some big drinks and nearly striking a Sergeant. On December 7th at approximately 1:37 a.m. Sergeant M.L. Jacobeen was traveling Northbound on Richmond Highway about to turn onto Garrisonville Road. Stopped next to him at the intersection was a Toyota Highlander. When the light turned green and both Sergeant Jacobeen and the SUV began to make the turn, the SUV drifted into Sergeant Jacobeen’s lane. To avoid a crash, Sergeant Jacobeen was forced to quickly apply the brakes. After the near miss and damage to a beautiful cruiser, Sergeant Jacobeen observed the SUV continue to drift and nearly strike a median. A traffic stop was conducted as Deputy C.A. Osborne responded to assist. The interior of the vehicle, and the driver’s breath, was radiating a strong alcoholic beverage odor that Sergeant Jacobeen remarked had a “distinct fruitiness to it.” Despite this, the 20-year-old driver denied consuming any alcohol. He would also deny almost running Sergeant Jacobeen off the roadway. While the driver could deny as much as he liked, eyes do not lie. Located in plain view were open containers of Big Sipz, specifically ones with a fruity flavor that would be rather distinct. Field sobriety tests were conducted and shortly after the driver was detained. The driver was charged with driving under the influence, underage possession of alcohol, drinking while driving, and the improper turn. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $3,000 secured bond. |
