A 39-year-old Woodbridge man who was “testing the waters” decided to switch things up and earned his sixth DUI offense in Stafford County.

On October 25th at approximately 12:23 a.m. Sergeant E.E. West was traveling Eastbound on Garrisonville Road near Eustace Road. At the intersection sat a Nissan. When a traffic light turns green, most people drive through the intersection; however, in this case when the light turned green, the driver got out of the vehicle, walked around it, and got back inside on the passenger side. After witnessing the unusual behavior, Sergeant West had to conduct a traffic stop. Luckily, it was clear the vehicle wasn’t going anywhere with no one in the driver’s seat.

Sergeant West made contact with the driver, identified as Robert Sanders, who was now in the passenger seat. Sanders advised the person in the back seat was the driver; however, that passenger was quick to correct that lie. Sanders would admit to being the driver because he was “really, really hungry” and needed some McDonald’s. The Big Mac would have to wait, for Sergeant West noticed signs of intoxication. Sanders would also admit to consuming an IPA before getting behind the wheel.

After conducting field sobriety tests, it was decided Sanders would be placed under arrest. Sanders, in response to hearing this news, ran out of his slippers in an attempt to flee. He would not make it far before getting chased down and detained. Sanders advised he wasn’t “really trying” to run, but merely “testing the water.” It seems the waters of Stafford County had a stronger current than he originally thought. It was also discovered Sanders had four DUI convictions in Prince William County with a fifth one pending.

Sanders was charged with driving under the influence sixth offense within ten years, felony driving while revoked, driving after forfeiture of his license, obstruction of justice, refusal, and stopping on a highway. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
