An 82-year-old Stafford man had to be extracted from an upside-down vehicle Friday night after driving under the influence.

On October 11th at approximately 9:28 p.m. Deputy S. Waheed responded to the 1900 block of Mountain View Road for an auto accident. It was advised a SUV had flipped over and was currently upside-down with the driver still inside. Due to the nature of the call and the potential danger, Deputy Waheed quickly arrived on scene.

Bystanders advised the driver, and solo occupant of the vehicle, was still inside. Using a glass breaker, Deputy Waheed broke one of the rear windows and entered the vehicle to check on the driver. Due to the possibility of a serious spine injury from the crash, Deputy Waheed waited for the assistance of Fire and Rescue staff to safely remove the driver from the vehicle. Within the vehicle there were numerous open containers of beer.

After being extracted from the vehicle, it was observed that the driver had signs of intoxication. He would admit to consuming two beers prior to getting behind the wheel. He was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for the injuries he sustained as a result of the crash. Due to the extent of his injuries, the driver was held at the hospital and issued a summons for driving under the influence.

We encourage all drivers to always drive sober.
