A 24-year-old Stafford man gave up after a short-lived pursuit Friday night, further proving running in Stafford County is just a one-way ticket to jail.

On October 4th at approximately 9:28 p.m. Deputy J.W. Ahern was in the 1000 block of Northbound Warrenton Road when he observed an Acura traveling 66 MPH. The driver slammed on his brake in hopes to avoid the inevitable, but it was too late. Deputy Ahern activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. When the Acura reached the red light at the Cardinal Forest Drive intersection, it would accelerate away.

The vehicle would turn onto Cardinal Forest Drive with Deputy Ahern in pursuit. The vehicle turned onto Baldwin Drive and continued to accelerate. As Deputy Ahern rounded a curve in the road, he observed the vehicle now stopped. The driver had one hand extended out of the sunroof and the other from his driver’s side window. This act of surrender was accepted as Deputy Ahern took the driver into custody with the assistance of Sergeant J.T. Forman and Deputy C.M. Sterne.

The driver, Devin Chewning, advised he ran because he thought he would get arrested for not having a license. He further advised he gave up because he didn’t know the neighborhood well enough. Due to his actions, he was charged with felony eluding and reckless driving. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.
