One 18-year-old driver brought a new meaning to Tea Time after he was found to be intoxicated behind the wheel. On September 24th at approximately 9:32 p.m. Deputy R. Tully was at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Port Aquia Drive. While there, he observed a Ford pickup lose control and fishtail as it turned onto Richmond Highway. After regaining control of the vehicle, the driver would continue at a high rate of speed and pass vehicles in multiple lanes. Due to the wild driving behavior, and loud exhaust that could be heard from a great distance away, Deputy Tully caught up to the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was identified as an 18-year-old, which took longer than it normally does considering he thought his debit card was his driver’s license. Deputy Tully noticed several obvious signs of intoxication, including the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s breath. Deputy Tully also observed an excessive amount of Twisted Tea cans in plain view. After conducting field sobriety tests and detaining the driver, Deputy Tully conducted a search of the vehicle. That search would uncover another excessive amount of Twisted Teas. The driver was charged with driving under the influence, driving after illegally consuming alcohol, unlawful possession of alcohol, reckless driving, failure to maintain control of a vehicle, failure to maintain the lane of travel, and excessive exhaust. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. Drive sober or get pulled over. |
