A 17-year-old Stafford male was detained after he attempted to flee from a traffic stop with a handgun Tuesday afternoon.

On September 17th at approximately 6:16 p.m. Sergeant B.U. Demirci was in the area of Warrenton Road and Soloman Drive. While there, he observed a Chevy with a license plate that belonged to a demolished Dodge. Finding this more than odd, Sergeant Demirci conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the Red Roof Inn, located at 386 Warrenton Road. Before making contact with any of the occupants, Sergeant Demirci observed one of the occupants attempting to conceal something. Due to this, additional deputies responded to assist.

The occupant in question admitted to concealing a bottle of Bud Light in the vehicle; however, deputies were more concerned with what was in the crossbody bag he was wearing. While conversing with Sergeant Demirci and Deputy C.M. Sterne, they observed the suspect to have several pre-flight indicators. These indicators were correct, for the suspect attempted to flee on foot; however, he did not make it far before deputies could detain him. Within his bag deputies located not only a credit card that was later determined to be stolen, but a firearm.

Criminal complaints for underage possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction of justice, credit card theft, and underage possession of alcohol were filed. Juvenile Intake was contacted and decided to detain the suspect. He was held at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Excellent work to get this firearm out of the hands of a juvenile. This is an active investigation and deputies are working to determine how the juvenile acquired the weapon.
