The laws in Virginia concerning farm use tags will be changing effective July 1st, 2024. Unregistered farm use panel trucks, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles will now have to display a DMV-issued permanent farm use placard. This means, if your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating 7,501 lbs. or greater, the red “Farm Use” tag (Picture 1) is acceptable when performing farm related duties. If your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating under 7,500 lbs., a DMV issued permanent farm use tag (Picture 2) will be required.

For those unsure if the new law will affect them, we encourage them to read VA CODE 46.2-666. If you still have questions regarding the legislation change, please contact our Traffic Safety Unit.
