A 53-year-old Stafford man wanted for a misdemeanor capias attempted to avoid being arrested by assaulting a deputy.

On December 27th Deputy S.C. Martin was in Stafford General District Court for a number of traffic related cases. One of those cases involved David Grice, where he did not show up. As a result, a misdemeanor capias was issued.

At approximately 11:52 a.m. deputies responded to Grice’s residence on Mount Vernon Avenue. While one occupant within the residence advised no one by that name lived there, Grice would soon come to the front door. Grice was less than cooperative, and attempted to slam the door. In doing so, he pinned one deputy’s arm within the door frame. Despite deputies demands to open the door, Grice advised he “doesn’t care” about the deputy and proceeded to brace himself up against the door to prevent the deputy from removing his arm.

Deputies were able to push against the door to get the one deputy’s arm free, and after a struggle, were able to detain Grice. Not only was he served on the original outstanding warrant, due to his efforts to avoid it, he earned three additional warrants. Grice was charged with assault on law enforcement, obstruction of justice with force, and obstruction of justice without force. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. The deputy received no serious injuries from the assault.
