A 58-year-old Stafford woman who hit a mailbox with her vehicle left a trail of breadcrumbs for deputies to follow late last night.

On October 10th at approximately 11:30 p.m. Deputy C.C. Crossett responded to Shelton Shop Road for a hit and run. The caller advised their mailbox was just struck and the driver fled the scene.

Deputy Crossett arrived on scene and located the dismembered mailbox surrounded by Ford vehicle parts. The victim advised they heard a loud noise and observed a white Ford sedan near what remained of their mailbox. The driver was unconscious when the victim first approached, but quickly woke up and drove away. Luckily, not only did the vehicle leave behind multiple parts, there was a trail of fluid leaking from the vehicle.

Deputy Crossett was hot on the trail which led to an apartment complex on Mountain View Road. There, he observed a white Ford sedan with recent damages. Deputy Crossett made contact with the driver, who not only appeared intoxicated, but who advised they consumed wine earlier.

The driver was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content over .2, as well as, hit and run. She was held at Rappahannock Regional jail until sober.
