A 55-year-old Stafford woman was arrested yesterday after a detective observed her driving drunk with a two-year-old child in the backseat.

On July 11th at approximately 1:14 p.m. Detective Sergeant M.E. Steininger was traveling Northbound on Richmond Highway in the area of Courthouse Road. The hawk-eyed detective observed a vehicle failing to maintain the lane of travel multiple times and even strike a curb as they entered the KFC parking lot. Detective Steininger radioed to Deputy C.S. Harding so a traffic stop could be conducted as the vehicle began traveling Southbound on Richmond Highway.

Deputy Harding quickly noticed the less than ideal driving behaviors and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Coal Landing Road. He made contact with both the driver, who had glassy, bloodshot eyes and the well-known odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath, as well as, the two-year-old in the back seat. When Deputy Harding asked the driver what she had consumed, the driver advised she had some Chardonnay.

The driver, identified as Donna Boykin, was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2 with a child, and felony child neglect. She was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $2,500 secured bond, while the two-year-old was turned over to her mother.
